Why "Limu"



When the first peoples of Southern California enjoyed the full richness of their cultural and spiritual traditions, there was a special dialect spoken by Ceremonial Leaders


It was this language that recanted the prayers and songs of the Sacred Bundle


In this cermonial language Limu means 'universe'

Limu can also mean a place of Creation. For example, the old stories describe a world forming in the oceans to the West. It is described as a place where Air, Water, Earth, and Fire combine and create fresh new landscapes. 

Limu is described as soft, still forming - like cooling lava. Several special places have been designated "Limu" for their semblance to this description, such as the Island of 'Limuw' (Santa Cruz of the Channel Islands).
